Viva Hunslet! D2578 Homecoming Weekend
6th June 2009

Leeds used to be locomotive builder for the world - but now the loco works have been flattened or submerged within a hellish landscape of link roads, clapped out housing stock, industrial estates and the general f*** you approach to urban planning that Leeds does so well. But the Middleton Railway provides an enclave and home for some of the products of the Leeds loco building industry. And this weekend - back to its Leeds home - was a very well restored D2578

D2578 was the star of the show - A fine piece of industrial design and very well turned out. D2578 had a short career on the Scottish Region before becoming a shunter for Bulmers Cider Works in Somerset. Full biog at: http://www.beerandrail.com/d2578lg_home.htm

D2999 - don't worry it's a fake. One of a late fifties small batch of Brush/Beyer Peakcock shunters - only of one which ever gained the lion and wheel. And it wasn't this one!

To the left is a disused siding to now semi-derelict plants and to the right is the tunnel under the M621 which leads to Moor Road. The line originally linked coal mines in the wooded hinterland of Leeds with staithes near to the Tetley Brewary

Kitsons, Fowler, Manning Wardle, Hudswell Clarke, Hunslet - were the big names of the substantial Leeds loco manufacturing industry down in the valley bottom. The Hunslet works closed in 1995 though the company lives on as part of LH Group of Burton on Trent. More on Leeds loco factories can be found here: http://uk.geocities.com/krisward42/hunslet.htm
